FIRST FOREST PROJECTS ACCEPTED!

The California Registry is pleased to announce the verification and registration of carbon reductions from the Garcia River Forest and the van Eck Forest, the first two forest projects to utilize the conservation management typology in the
Forest Project Protocol.
  • At 23,780 acres, the Garcia River Forest is the centerpiece of one of the largest river systems on California's north coast. The Conservation Fund owns and manages the Garcia River Forest as a sustainable working forest that saves wildlife habitat, improves water quality, and preserves the traditional economic base of the local community.
  • Owned by the Fred M. van Eck Forest Foundation, the 2,200-acre Fred M. van Eck Forest located in Humboldt County is managed by The Pacific Forest Trust to increase CO2 stores, restore biodiversity and produce sustainable timber supplies.
Details about The Conservation Fund's Garcia River Forest and The Pacific Forest Trust's van Eck Forest projects can be found as linked documents at the bottom of their public CARROT reports.View the statement of serialized Carbon Reduction Tons (CRT) for the Garcia River and van Eck

NEW PARTNERSHIP FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT PROTOCOLS WITH CARB, ICLEI AND THE CLIMATE REGISTRY

The California Registry is partnering with the California Air Resources Board, ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, USA and The Climate Registry to develop GHG accounting and reporting guidance for local governments. The first phase of our efforts, which began this month, will focus on developing an "industry-specific" entity reporting protocol tailored for local government operations. For California Registry local government members, this Local Government Operations Protocol will be supplementary to the reporting guidance in the General Reporting Protocol.  For ICLEI members, the protocol will provide guidance for the government operations portion of their GHG inventory. The Climate Registry will look to these standards as it develops specific guidance for local governments in the future.  The protocol is being developed using the California Registry's protocol development process, which utilizes a multi-stakeholder protocol workgroup made up of California Registry, ICLEI, and The Climate Registry members and reporters, environmental organizations, local government experts and state agency representatives from across the country.  The protocol is expected to be completed in August 2008.

The California Registry, ARB, ICLEI and The Climate Registry will also partner to develop guidance for conducting a community-wide GHG emissions inventory. Work on the community-level guidance will begin later this year. For more information about this initiative, visit our Local Government Protocols in Progress webpage or contact \n This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it href="mailto: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it " target=_blank linktype="undefined" track="on"> \n This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it face=Arial color=#0000ff size=2> \n This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">Rachel Tornek.

We are happy to announce that 2006 emission inventories from almost 100 companies have been found to meet the standards of our General Reporting Protocol Version 2.2and we are pleased to accept their emissions reports into the California Climate Action Registry database. The California Registry is working steadily towards finalizing its review of 2006 emissions data reports. If your organization has submitted a verified 2006 emissions inventory but your name does not appear above or on the Climate Action Leaders webpage, the California Registry is still reviewing your report. This remains our top priority so that we can accept the data, make your public reports available on our website, and grant all qualifying members Climate Action Leader status. We thank all of our members for their patience with this process and support for insuring integrity and consistency in reporting!

ANSI LAUNCHES PILOT VERIFICATION PROGRAM TO ACCREDIT NEW VERIFIERS
There is growing demand for GHG verification services.  In an effort to help streamline application processes, the California Registry intends to recognize new GHG verifiers for entity reporting approved by either The Climate Registry (TCR) and/or the California Air Resources Board (CARB).  Thus, the California Registry will not issue a request for new verifier applications this year.  Firms seeking accreditation status under The Climate Registry (TCR) must be ISO 14065 approved (international standard for accrediting GHG inventory verifiers) and meet program-specific requirements defined by TCR.  To achieve this, firms may now participate in a pilot accreditation program offered by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) based on the ISO 14065 standard.  ANSI is accepting applications through May 15, 2008. To request an application, firms should follow ANSI's instructions posted online at: www.ansi.org/ghg.  Once the pilot phase is completed, ANSI will accept new applications for accreditation on a rolling basis.  More information is available from ANSI.The California Air Resources Board is also developing its accreditation requirements, and expects to have new verifiers accredited in 2008.  For more information, please subscribe to ARB's mailing list for GHG verification at http://www.arb.ca.gov/listserv/listserv.php.Firms seeking accreditation status as a project verifier for the California Registry's Climate Action Reserve should also seek ISO 14065 accreditation status and meet program-specific requirements defined by the California Registry.  Participating in ANSI's pilot program should also meet these requirements.Further updates on the accreditation process for new California Registry and TCR verifiers will continue to be provided through this newsletter as they are available.
